The artist formerly known as Brandyn Jaye finally puts together his first project post new moniker. With the name change comes a whole new style to match. Several songs come with a gothic feeling, much akin to his genius dual single Second Circle/Angel. But then it also wavers back into his original, less-dark style.
Twelve years ago today was a tragedy in American history, so I’ma briefly acknowledge that. RIP Bernard. RIP everyone else lost of dat day, hope the families of those lost are doing well today in spite of that.
Now, onto this music.
Kwes of the ST3 brought some friends along on this trudging journey through each of their respective minds. Hard, groovy, and introspective track, yet really general. Kinda puts you in that same cloud of thoughts as them as they go through various things they see in the world and in their lives. Lots of contrast from verse to verse, too.
AND ALL WE EVER DO IS COME UP… COME UP… WE COME DOWN… SO WASSUP!?? Aye, this is the jam yo. This joint popped up in my e-mail a while ago, and I’ve been enjoying the hell out of it. Real exciting and hype music. Flow on point, features Ciscero’s specific subject matter. Now ya’ll finally get to jam it. Kids Wear Crowns coming soon.
OWLKINGLORD goes in on this track using a fusion of Alchemist and Lex Luger instrumentation, spitting a lot harder than the dudes who originally rapped on those respective tracks. Dude finds some weird place between comedy, gothic darkness, and just…. spittin’. Dudes technical ability is just
Song is too long to type about, yet is enchanting enough to listen all the way through. Kinda scary when I think about it, but listen anyway.
eXquire without a doubt had, not only some of his greatest music this year, but some of THE greatest music this year. He seems to have found and embraced his sound with Kismet, or at least whatever went on in his life preceding the project. This song is great: passionate, soulful, deep, sensual, allat. Yuhfeelme? Plus da beat just fills me with youthful vigor. It reminds me of my days down in FL when I was a young buck leaping from logs like frogger and whatnot. Lemme not get carried away though…
Doughmars does it again with his new track 24k. On this track he uses a consistent rhyme schemes and powerful vocabulary to express a player, you-can’t-touch-me type of demeanor. The production on here is also impressive with its old-school, cinematic sound with an intentional lo-fi quality that helps define the term “retroyork” which Mars describes his music as.
Southern artist, Tito Lopez releases this glitzy-sounding single for his new mixtape called “Y.O.U”. It’s one some come-up humble stuff as far as the content. He also has double features on this with Trae the Truth and Jameel. This is one of the better verses that I’ve heard from Trae lately, though he uses this flow in excess and Jameel shows up impressively as a relatively unknown rapper.
The Architect from the Flatbush Zombies drops a little track to show something new from the gang. It feels like forever since one of them have made or been on a track. Anyway, this song is super groovy, something to easily get you up out your seat and/or head bobbing. Erick also shows a recurring improvement in his delivery. Easy playlist spot.
OWLKINGLORD also makes a heavily entertaining song with this obnoxious and misogynistic track called “Decent” to be featured on his upcoming project called Black Bruce Lee. This song also features the talented emcee, Frostbite and is produced by Suede Moccasins who has tons of other impressive work. I’m interested to see what the KING comes up with in his next feature-length.
This here’s a cipher featuring a couple of talented artists that performed at or was at this show at Getaway lounge this past weekend. If you’re in the DMV area come to the next one on May 1st 2290 Old Washington Rd, Waldorf MD 206o2. Anyway, this joint has Tone301, Flite, CJ the Genesis, Shalaam Kenobi, Spanish Harlem, and OWLKINGLORD. If you’ve been above rocks, you should have heard of some of them. Links to articles I have with them in it on their names.
Got some brand new projects for ya’ll to check out. Some interesting music that needs to be heard.
We gonna start off with Midcity by Clipping. Clipping has this unique production style where they use other little noises in their music instead of the typical instrumental “music” usually used. Think of that scene in Tarzan when they was banging on pots and stuff and make a beat out of that
but the noises aren’t limited to banging they have other weird distortion sounds too, as you’ll hear in the intro that sounds like bad reception. And the rapping is what I’d like to call swag rap. Even amidst such strange sounds the emcee manages to rap comfortably and smoothly. In a way, a weird way, the rapping reminds me of A$AP Rocky. So if you’re ready to hear something new definitely check this out.
Next up we got the Mareo Nissan by CeeMajor and Sol Daylahhh. This joint is a real fun collaborative EP and a lot of mellow instrumentals. Features freestyles and fun lyrics like when CJ’s raging and saying “f*ck the Seahawks” as a Redskins fan, or OWLKINGLORD displays his iconic whimsical lyrics. Anyway, this is some quick entertaining ish for hip-hop heads. Definitely worth checking out, so do that.
