Itz My single picks (2/6/13) – (2/14/13)

What’s going on? Been a little while since I’ve done one of these, but I promise it was worth the wait. This past week or so has been filled with great music, and it’s only gonna get better from here. Alpoko Don’s new project, The Ol’ Soul EP, is droppin next week, and my homies Shinobi of the 12 tribes revealing their songs for ya’ll later during that week so stay tuned for that. Anyway, let’s get to these singles.

Brand new Gangsta Gibbs is on point. Got a smooth, soulful, Erykah Badu-esque sound to it and Gibbs flow is just grooving all over this joint. Content is tight too, it’s about a chick and his experiences with her going from great to worst. Anyway, can’t say much else about this except that it’s great Freddie Gibbs is one of my favorite rappers right now and I think he’s bout to be on top of the rap game any minute now.

I can’t stop listening to Sir EU lately. Dude has such a unique style, with his really persistent and smoothly connected flow. His rhymes and assonance are super precise. And besides all of that his music is just fun and catchy to listen to, so enjoy these songs and this video here. And shouts out to Kisai, too, one of my new favorite producers.

These guys reached out to me on soundcloud and I was impressed by their music. The MyNORS have a high-energy level on this track and great production that really fits them. It’s also, in a way, a revisitation of an older fashion of hip-hop that hasn’t really been around much; akin to a group like Sweatshop Union.

One of my favorite tracks of this past week or so, Forever by Ciscero. I’ve seen this guy perform before at Arts Under Pressure in D.C. a couple of years ago and this is the best track I’ve heard from him since. This song is really personal and transparent and has a great smooth sound to it. I’ve been banging this joint constantly since I’ve heard it.

And then there’s this joint. I’m not totally on good terms with this joint, but it’s probably just not my tastes. I think it’s some bluegrass/folk and rap fusion, which is mad interesting and something really new (something I welcome). I only like the rapping though. And the beat is really fun too, it’s like some little kid, bob-your-head-from-side-to-side, type music.
